VSS Project

Custom SDR Streaming Platform for Chesapeake Bay Radio Association

VSS Business Solutions designed and deployed a custom Software Defined Radio streaming platform for the Chesapeake Bay Radio Association, WA3SFJ. The solution integrates SDR receivers, custom gateway software, low-latency audio transport, web-server infrastructure, and a standalone browser-based player into one expandable radio streaming system.

VSS Business Solutions recently completed the design and implementation of a custom Software Defined Radio (SDR) streaming platform for the Chesapeake Bay Radio Association (CBRA), amateur radio station WA3SFJ.

The goal of the project was to create a reliable, expandable system capable of receiving live radio traffic through dedicated SDR receivers, processing the audio locally, and delivering it to listeners through a modern web-based player.

From Radio Signal to Web Browser

Rather than relying on a traditional scanner connected to a computer, the system uses Software Defined Radio technology to create dedicated software-controlled receivers.

VSS Business Solutions developed the gateway architecture responsible for managing the SDR receivers, demodulating the selected radio channels, processing the resulting audio, monitoring receiver status, and transporting the live audio to the club’s web infrastructure.

The result is an end-to-end system that connects radio-frequency reception directly to a browser-based listening experience.

Custom SDR Gateway

At the heart of the system is a custom VSS-developed SDR Gateway.

The gateway provides the software layer between the SDR hardware and the streaming infrastructure. Each receiver can be independently configured and monitored, allowing the system to support different frequencies and operating requirements while maintaining a common management platform.

The architecture was also designed with expansion in mind. Additional receiver channels can be incorporated without redesigning the entire system.

Low-Latency Streaming Architecture

A major design objective was keeping the audio path efficient.

The finished architecture transports processed audio directly from the SDR Gateway to a dedicated receiver service on the web infrastructure. This eliminates unnecessary intermediate streaming platforms and gives the club greater control over its own system.

The web server then makes the live audio available to listeners through the CBRA website.

This approach provides a streamlined path:

Radio Signal → SDR Receiver → VSS SDR Gateway → Streaming Bridge → Web Player → Listener

Standalone Web Player

VSS Business Solutions also developed a dedicated web player for the system.

The player is designed to operate as a standalone application while also being embedded within the WA3SFJ website or other approved web pages.

Listeners can access the radio stream from a standard modern browser without installing specialized radio or SDR software.

The player architecture allows the streaming system and the public website to remain independent. Changes to the website do not require rebuilding the SDR receiver platform, and receiver hardware can be serviced or replaced without redesigning the public-facing player.

Local Administration and Monitoring

The system includes a dedicated administration interface for managing and monitoring the SDR Gateway.

The interface provides visibility into receiver operation, stream status, and system configuration while keeping administrative controls separated from the public listener experience.

The management interface was branded specifically for the CBRA installation while retaining VSS Business Solutions engineering and integration identification.

Designed for Expansion

Although developed for CBRA’s current radio streaming requirements, the platform was intentionally designed as an expandable system.

The architecture can support additional receiver channels and provides a foundation for future monitoring, telemetry, alerting, and radio-system integration capabilities.

This makes the project more than a simple online scanner. It is a purpose-built radio receiving, processing, transport, monitoring, and web-delivery platform.

Engineering the Complete Solution

This project combined several disciplines into one integrated system:

  • Software Defined Radio integration
  • Digital radio and audio processing
  • Custom gateway software development
  • Network audio transport
  • Web-server application integration
  • Browser-based streaming
  • Administrative monitoring
  • Responsive web-player development
  • System deployment and testing
  • Expandable multi-receiver architecture

By controlling the complete path from RF reception through the listener interface, VSS Business Solutions was able to develop a solution specifically around the radio club’s operational requirements rather than forcing the project into a generic commercial streaming platform.

The completed WA3SFJ SDR Streaming Platform demonstrates how custom software, networking, radio technology, and web development can be integrated into a single practical solution.
